My soul needs the ocean. I escape to the coast to smell the
air and feel the salt breezes. Coming originally from England,
a small country entirely surrounded by oceans, I regularly
visit the coast for enjoyment and to renew my spirit. In the
Pacific Northwest, where I now live, we do not speak of "going
to the beach" as our southern neighbors do. We "go
to the coast" and you will see why when you look at the
images. Much of the Pacific Coast from the Golden Gate Bridge
to British Columbia is very rugged with high cliffs and rocky
beaches. It is generally cool in temperature, and often windy;
not warm and balmy like the beaches you find further south
or on tropical islands.
Dotted along Hwy 101 are some lovely picturesque towns that
offer all sorts of reasons to visit them. Some of our favorites
are Eureka, CA, Brookings, Bandon, Newport and Seaside, all
in Oregon. Washington state offers tucked away harbors, the
beautiful San Juan Islands and, of course, Seattle. People
from all over travel up and down this coast enjoying natural
scenic beauty from the redwoods to whale watching. Having
once spent a great deal of time sailing, I enjoyed the chance
to see the shoreline from the ocean. Now, again when I am
flying, I see the views in reverse of the normal perspective
and find it very rewarding and creatively inspiring.
